How to Measure a Casual Shirt That Fits
FIT NOTES / EVERPEAK KNITS
Ordering a casual shirt is easier when you bring a few useful numbers with you. Your usual letter size can vary across cuts and fabrics, but a familiar shirt gives you a consistent reference.
Choose the right reference
Start with a button-front shirt you enjoy wearing in a similar way. If you want a neat shirt for work, measure one you normally wear buttoned. If you want a loose layer, measure a shirt that already gives you that amount of room. A reference with a similar shoulder shape will be more useful than one with a very different cut.
Measure flat, without pulling
Button the front and place the shirt on a table. Smooth it without stretching. Measure underarm to underarm for flat chest width, shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back, and from the high shoulder next to the collar to the hem for length. Keep the tape level and record each number. For a back-length chart, use the corresponding measurement on the back.
Make the chest comparison correctly
If your familiar shirt measures 22 inches across the chest, its approximate chest circumference is 44 inches. Compare 22 with a flat-width chart or 44 with a circumference chart. The numbers describe the garment, not your body. This distinction matters more than simply ordering one size up.
Check the whole shape
Two shirts with the same chest measurement can still fit differently. A dropped shoulder changes where the sleeve begins. A shorter body may feel right untucked but less useful tucked in. Consider the shoulder and length together, then think about how you want to move and layer.
Use the chart for that shirt
For example, the Relaxed Point-Collar Short Sleeve has a loose silhouette, while the Cotton Corduroy Pocket Shirt is described as fitted. Their size labels alone do not tell the whole story. Compare each product’s own measurements rather than transferring a letter size from another style.
When the numbers are close
Garments can vary slightly because of manual measurement and construction. Allow the tolerance stated on the product page, and decide whether you prefer a closer or looser fit. Avoid choosing a garment measurement that merely matches your body measurement without room to move.
